This blog IS about fitness, but it also deals with some very intimate details of a time in my life when I was going through cancer. Hopefully you will be able to find something useful in my blog, whether it be related to fitness or maybe even some motivation. Feel free to take a look around and also feel free to leave your thoughts if a particular blog touched you in some way. Thanks for stopping by! Most people have probably seen the Disney classic "Pinnocchio" as some point in their life. If you have, you have probably heard Jiminy Crickett sing the familiar song 'When You Wish Upon A Star" (If you haven't, listen to it here)

One line from the song goes, "...anything your heart desires will come to you."

This really is a heartfelt sentiment and there are scores of people who genuinely believe this. All we have to do is make a wish and "all your dreams will come true." And as much as we want to believe this, it's not completely true...here's why...

In order for something to happen... action MUST be taken!

Let me say that again...In order for something to happen... action MUST be taken!!

To me it's like this...you can have a full tank of gas in the car and you can have every intention of going on a trip, but until you actually get in the car and turn the ignition, press on the gas and start driving down the road, you are going to ALWAYS stay in your driveway! The reality of turning "I wish" into "I will" takes one thing....ACTION!

Look...I understand that change can be a frightening thing for most people...I get that! But at the same time, in order for one to really take control of your life, courage is needed and courage goes hand in hand with taking action. One can't take action without having the courage to make that decision to be the change that you want!

So quit wishing and turn that wish into action by telling yourself, "I WILL!!"

I don't know about you...but no one has ever asked me this question. Up until recently, I have never even asked myself this question. I say "up until recently" because it has always been my mindset that I would fail at whatever I attempted. I was not brought up with the notion of having dreams, setting goals and doing my best to accomplish them. There was never any talk like, "What are your dreams?" or "What kind of goals do you have?" But it was never instilled in me to think about goals that I

Don't get me wrong, while I was growing up, I was able to witness how hard my parents both worked to take care of me and my four siblings. I knew that hard work was required to take care of family. I knew that being responsible required hard work to take care of those responsibilities. But I think somewhere along the way, as we grow up and have these responsibilities to take care of, we often forget about such lofty ideas like dreams and goals.

I feel that at some point, we need to re-evaluate where we are in life and take time to either establish some goals or take some of those old goals we set for ourselves and get busy trying to fulfill those goals. After all, if we are not trying to reach our potential, then one isn't really living are they? It's like Morgan Freeman's character in the movie Shawshank Redemption says, "Get busy living or get busy dying." I feel that a lot of us are busy just trying to get by that we don't have time to think about goals or dreams. In my opinion, when we stop dreaming, we stop living. Dreams are what gives life substance! Achieving those dreams is what should light a fire under us to go out and not settle! Dreams can transform us into an entire different human being.

So the question I have for you is...

WHAT WOULD YOU ATTEMPT TO DO IF YOU KNEW YOU COULD NOT FAIL??!!?

I really would like to know...so come on and leave a comment!

It was about three years ago that I watched the P90X informercial on late night TV. After much debate, I decided to order the program and I'll tell you....my life hasn't been the same since! It was tough and there were many times where I thought I would quit, but at the end of that first 90 days I felt like a new person! I was stronger and more confident because I knew that I had accomplished something worthwhile!

So that brings me to the point of this particular blog!

Starting on November 4, 2013, I will be co-hosting the Xtreme Transformation Challenge with some of my fellow Beachbody coaches!

I am searching for five to six people who have that desire and mental toughness to commit to 90 days of P90X OR P90X2 and who KNOW, like I did when I did my first round or P90X, that an Xtreme change is needed in their life!

***WARNING*** The workouts are brutal (especially if you haven't worked out in a while) but I guarantee you that if you stick with the program, you WILL see results!

So if you are ready to get started, or if you have a family member or friend who may be interested in making a life changing transformation in their life, then contact me to find out how to get started!
One of the biggest reasons (AKA excuses) I hear from people is that they don't have enough time to workout (among countless other excuses). Well look no further because that excuse can no longer be used!

Shaun T (the creator of Insanity) has come up with a new exciting workout program that is as intense as Insanity but that's where the similarity ends. Most Insanity workouts are anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour long. With Focus T25, you get the same intensity as Insanity...but in ONLY 25 MINUTES!!! Yes...you read that right, ONLY 25 MINUTES!!! Focus T25 is a 10 week program with each workout lasting only 25 minutes, five days a week!

So you may ask...how can a workout that only lasts 25 minutes get you such awesome results? Here is brief overview of the different workouts that comprise Focus T25:

The Base Kit comes with:
10 Workouts
How many times have you tried to do something and maybe you failed miserably? Maybe you're one of those people who will try to accomplish something and no matter what you do to try to succeed, it just doesn't work out. That saying "one step forward...two steps back" might pertain to you. But even with faced with many uncertainties, what separates those who try, fail and then quit from those that try, fail, but pick themselves back up and try again until they succeed?

It all comes down to three things...desire, perseverance and patience.

Every goal or dream usually start with desire. Now I'm not talking about some spontaneous idea that is thought of on a whim. I'm talking about a all out, full blown desire that keeps you up at night. The kind of desire that as soon as you wake up in the morning, that desire is there, pushing you out of bed telling you that you NEED to get things done to bring your desires into reality! The kind of desire that will go unfulfilled until you get to where you are going. Yea...THAT kind of desire!

Now even though you have that deep burning desire to make your goals a reality, something else is needed... Perseverance!

Perseverance is defined as:

-steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/perseverance)

So you have a desire to do something great. Next comes a difficult part about making those dreams of yours a reality. As you can see in the definition, there will be difficulties. Yes there will be obstacles. And YES...discouragement will creep up on you and try to keep from reaching your goals. That's just the way life is...get over it and move on!! Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back on track. If what you desire is so great and that important to you then you know that reaching that goal or dream is going to take hard work and you also know that obtaining something great is NOT going to be easy. Accept that fact and move on citizen!

You have the desire...you have the perseverance...NOW...one other thing is essential...patience! Everyone has head that Rome wasn't built in a day. So it should stand to reason that achieving your goals and dreams isn't going to happen overnight. Like the person who is overweight and wants to lose weight. That person needs to understand that they didn't get overweight in a short amount of time. It took years of not eating healthy and not exercising to put all that weight on. So anyone who thinks that a magic diet pill is going to help them drop all that weight overnight has another thing coming and is in for a rude awakening! It's that way with ANY dream or goal!! The trick is to keep working at obtaining your goal and learn how to hone that fine art of having patience. I guarantee that as long as you keep pushing, you will come out on top!!!

Life is rough! Some people know that more than others...but ultimately we all have experienced rough times and hardships. But even though we all go through these kind of situations, we as human beings have an amazing ability to persevere and overcome hard times...I truly believe that this is one of the greatest abilities we as human beings posses! So when you've been knocked down, stop and make the decision that you are not going to go down like that...you are going to stand up, and fight like hell and finish strong!!

Everyday we see signs all around us. Some signs, like stop signs, are for our safety and protection. Some signs tell us that the next exit has restrooms and places to eat. Some are advertisements for this product or that product, and some offer important information like weather conditions while one is traveling. Even though we continually have signs that we actually see on a daily basis, there are some signs that we don't see, but yet they scare the hell out of us. You don't think so?
<<<< LOOK AT THE PICTURE!!!

Human beings, by nature, are creatures of habit. If you don't think so, think about the things you do everyday. I know for me, I usually start my day at a certain time everyday. I have my routine where I get out of bed, go shower, wake up my wife and daughter and get them going. go into the kitchen to start making breakfast, get lunches together, take my daughter to school, get dropped off at work, etc. The only time I don't do this is on the weekends. But then on the weekends,I have another set of routine's that I follow. So as much as we don't think we fall into that category, we actually do! Because we are wired in this way, the thought of change can prove to be quite problematic for many people (myself included)!

Now some people can see the sign and accept the fact that they need to change. Now that doesn't mean that they like the fact that they have to change, but they are willing to change. Then you have those on the opposite side of the spectrum. Those who need to change, but refuse at ALL costs. They kick and scream and rant and rave and STILL they won't change. So what makes these two groups of people different? Let's look at the first group of people.

The ones who are willing to change can see that a change is beneficial to them. They see the writing on the wall and want to do something about it. For instance, let's say someone is diagnosed with Type II diabetes. They consult with their doctor and they are given a regimen to follow to help control their diabetes. They take the required medication and/or do their part to follow an exercise and nutrition program to get their diabetes in check. They may not like the change they have to undergo, but ultimately they will make the change because they realize the benefits of making such a change. For these people, they realize that the change they need to make will actually prolong their life and this change will be better, not only for them, but for the people around them. So what about the other group of people??

The other group of people can see the writing on the wall too. Maybe it's diabetes...maybe it's smoking...maybe it's some other type of behavior that they know is not healthy or beneficial to them. They are told by their doctor that they need to make a change or face the consequences later on. They know what they have to do ( *hint hint* change) but yet are unwilling to make a change, or they procrastinate and tell themselves, "I'll do it later!" Whatever their reasons are for not changing, they are willing to suffer the consequences of their decision. These people MIGHT change only if their circumstances are extremely dire! But even then...that's no guarantee that they will change.

In both cases, it all comes down to a making a choice. The choice to change or the choice not to change... that choice is entirely up to us to make, So when given the choice, which choice will you make? Will that sign that you see scare you into not doing anything because of the fear associated with change? Or will you choose to let that sign of change be a positive thing that allows you to make the necessary, positive change that you deserve?

For the longest time I never thought of myself as a strong person. There are times now that I don't see myself as strong. There were times in my life when I felt so fragile and vulnerable, and it was at those times that I wondered if I would make it through whatever storm I was going through at that time. And then on August 1, 2011, I was hit with what may the equivalent of an F5 tornado. I was told I had cancer. Here I was, 39 years old, recently married, a five year old daughter at the time, and I was diagnosed with cancer. Let me tell you...if there was a time that I ever felt fragile and vulnerable, this was the time! The initial shock was pretty overwhelming. Of course my wife and I were trying to make sense of it all, but in reality we couldn't. But then a strange thing happened. After a couple of days, after the first few waves of emotion had passed, and after living with and accepting the news for a few days, there was a calmness that overcame me. Sure there was still many uncertainties that we would face, there were still struggles and hardships that we have to face in the months to come, but deep inside my spirit, I knew that we would be okay and the this was just another storm to go through. As a matter of fact, one of my mantras was, "This is just a bump in the road that we will get over!"

Maybe that's the thing about inner strength....maybe we really don't know what kind of strength we possess until we have to rely on that strength in order to survive. I can look back now and tell myself, "Yea...I guess I was strong when I needed to be." But at that time, it really had nothing to do with deliberately telling myself that I had to be strong. I think much of it had to do with survival and knowing that I had to fight the "C" monster! There was no room for negative thinking...there was no room for being overwhelmed with emotions....there was no time for feeling sorry for myself. All of those kind of thoughts had no room in my plans of kicking the monkey on my back square in the face and telling him to leave me alone!

Even though I had my fight with cancer and I was blessed with being able to overcome it, there are many people out there who face their own struggles but yet aren't acknowledged for it. The single parent trying to be both mom and dad all while providing for that child and trying to make ends meet. What about the elderly people who are put into nursing homes and no one goes to visit them? Then there are people who may see like they have their life together, but secretly they are battling their own demons. The thing that all these people have in common is that they go on day after day and continue to overcome their challenges in life. They may not be aware of it, but their inner strength is constantly being displayed.

So when you think that you aren't strong enough to get through life's everyday challenges. When you feel like life is getting the best of you. Remember that YOU have that inner strength inside of you too! Take any challenge that life throws at you and KNOW that you can overcome it.You really are stronger than you think you are and when you get over that mountain of uncertainty, you can look back at tell yourself, "Yea...I did it!!"

(Now of course, I couldn't have had the inner strength without support! First and foremost, all thanks and Glory has to go to my Heavenly Father who continued to watch over me, protect me and strengthened me throughout the fight. Next, my loving wife and daughter who were constantly by my side. My mom, my three sisters and my brother and their families were also there for me, in addition to all my other family members. The countless prayers and support from both dear friends and even strangers also helped me fight! Without this constant support team, I could not have had the inner strength to endure.)

We live in a cynical world full of pessimism. There's no getting around that fact. We all have friends, acquaintances, sometimes even family members who always see the glass as half empty. When we are constantly surrounded by all that negativity, often times it can rub off on us without us knowing it! Not only do we get this kind of attitude from people we know, we are constantly bombarded with negativity in movies, through the media, the internet, and countless other sources.

On rare occasions we will run across people who aren't filled with negativity. These people are quite the opposite as a matter of fact. These are the people who will find the positivity, even in the most dire of circumstances. They could be in the middle of a natural disaster and they will still have that spark of positivity.

As we make our way through our life journey, we have a choice as to whether we allow ourselves to display a negative behavior or a positive one. We can look at the glass half empty...or we can choose to look at the glass half full. If we choose to look at the glass as half empty, then we will deliberately look for the negative things in other aspects of life. The same can be said if we look at the glass as half full. When we do this, we will purposely look for the positive things in any situation. When we choose to see the positivity in life, our attitudes will reflect this decision. That one decision can work wonders with other things we undertake in our life. We will be able to face the challenges in our life and know that we will be able get past those challenges. We will be able to look at the negativity in the world and know that there is beauty in the world, despite what the naysayers tell us!

So the next time you feel the urge to feed the monster of negativity with even more negativity, remember that you have a choice. You have the choice to rise above the negativity and see the glass as half full. You can make a deliberate decision to not allow such negativity in your life. You can make a difference by turning that negativity around and letting your positive attitude shine through to others. Give someone a reason to see the glass as half full!!! I think we've all heard those immortal words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,

"I have a dream..."

Dr. King had a dream of equality for people of all races. The dream he had was a dream, that in his time, seemed impossible...especially considering that the civil rights of many African Americans were being violated. I'm sure Dr. King knew that before his dream would become a reality, it would take sacrifice, hard work, determination and hours upon hours of dedication to the cause. I'm sure that it didn't matter to Dr. King how long it took to achieve the dream...as long as the dream became a reality.

If you really think about it, the overall attitude of Dr. King should inspire us to realize our dreams and goals... it doesn't matter what goals or dreams you may have. Maybe you want lose 30 pounds...or start your own business. Maybe you want to build a better relationship with your family and friends. Whatever your dream or goal is,the same traits that Dr. King possessed are necessary to obtain your goals.

Sacrifice- All goals and dreams require a sacrifice of some sort. If you want to improve your health, that might mean giving up certain foods and replacing them with healthier choice. If you want to start your own business, that might mean that you have to stop spending on non-essentials in order to save up starting capital. The sacrifices you make today will put you one step closer to your goal.

Hard Work- Nothing EVER comes easy when it comes to achieving your goals and dreams. There's no getting around it...you must work hard to get that goal you're chasing. Everything from fitness to relationships REQUIRE that the work be put in order to get results. DO THE WORK!!!

Determination- If you want to succeed at anything, you have to have an attitude of being determined. You can't allow the everyday challenges in life to get you down. In order to progress, you have to rise above those challenges.

Hours upon hours of dedication and committment- What are you willing to do to achieve your goal? In order to reach your dreams, time MUST be spent in order for your dream to become a reality. The more time you spend in working on your dreams and goals, the more you stand a chance of succeeding

Having a dream or goal is the easy part. Working towards and achieving that goal is a different story altogether. No matter what your dream is, no matter how big it is, no matter what it takes, each and every one of us has the potential to reach deep inside ourselves and achieve greatness!!! So what are you waiting for? Like the picture says, time will pass anyway...might as well chase that dream and make it a reality!!!

What is YOUR dream???

We all have a past...there's no denying that fact. For some, the past is full of wonderful memories and nothing but happiness, maybe infused with brief moments of loss or trials. But overall, the past is for the most part enjoyable.

For others, the past is a painful reminder of decisions and regrets that were mistakenly made. The past is full of hurts that seem to always creep back into existence at a moment's notice, and the past will always be a hindrance and sometimes an excuse to keep from moving forward. Some people would rather use the past and cling onto it and carry it around like a big bag of rocks! Let me tell you...that bag of rocks can get HEAVY if someone decides to carry it around for a long time...no wonder the past keeps dragging some people down!

I believe that what happens in our past should fashion and mold us into
better individuals. Not everyone thinks or feels that way though. They would rather carry that bag of rocks around with them and let the past control their lives than lose all that unnecessary baggage. What people don't realize is that until they lose that extra weight, there is NO WAY that they can move forward towards a better future.

But here's the thing...all the mistakes you made, all the things you did or didn't do don't have to be a part of your future. You have a choice to make better decisions. You have a choice on the things you do (or don't do) in order to reach your goals. All the baggage of the past has no place in your future. All the hurts and pains of the past shouldn't keep you from achieving the greatness that you were born with! Leave your past behind you, discover your greatness, and move forward with your future!!!! Maybe there have been times when you tried and tried to accomplish something and were met with failure. And maybe it seems that no matter what you do to try to get ahead, something always drags you backwards. You may think the saying, "One step forward and two steps back" might always apply to your life. The truth is that all of use have probably felt like this at one time or another. I honestly believe that when times get rough, it is our perspective on any given situation that makes the difference on whether we let that situation get the best of us, or whether we rise above that situation and use that experience to learn and grow as a human being. In today's society, we have it constantly ingrained in our consciousness that failure is a terrible thing. We need to be honest with ourselves and accept the fact that failure is a part of life. But the thing is...without failure, we can never have success!! There are countless stories of successful people who failed many times. The difference that separates those successful people from those who don't experience success is the willingness to learn from their failures and rise above their failings. The ability to accept failure and learn from it requires a fair amount of humbleness, dedication and a never say die attitude. In order to rise up above failure to achieve success, you can't let your failings keep you down. You have to get up, dust yourself off and keep going! Success doesn't come easy...but then again life isn't easy. Take your failures and turn them around keep getting up!!! Have you ever reached a point in your life where you realized that you are sick and tired? Maybe you're fed up with the direction your life is going. Maybe you're sick and tired of being sick and tired. You know that there is more to your life than just the everyday routine things you do. You know that you have greatness built inside of you and yet maybe for whatever reason you haven't realized your true potential. While we all have the potential to be great, we all have to reach a point where we say...ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!

SO...with that said...when do you reach the point where you tell yourself enough is enough? For me personally, my "enough is enough" moment came when I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. My blood sugar levels were WAY out of control and at the rate I was going, I was headed towards a big possibility that if I didn't change the things I was doing in my life, I was headed to an early death. That was my reality at that time. At the same time, I was recently married and we had a daughter. If there ever was a time when I had to make changes, that was the time! I had a wife and daughter who needed me to be around and take care of them. I had a responsibility to be there for them to provide for them and take care of them. I knew that I had to change my life or I would be letting them down in a big way. That is when I made some serious changes in my life. I started working out and I changed my eating habits. When I started exercising regularly and eating better, my blood sugar levels were back to normal and I was taken off all the medication I was on for the diabetes and high blood pressure.

Even though I was successful in making those changes in my life, there is always one thought in the back of mind that always makes me wonder. Why did it take being diagnosed with Type II diabetes for me to say enough is enough? Why does it take something as drastic as an illness to wake us up and realize, "HEY...I NEED TO CHANGE THE WAY I'M LIVING MY LIFE!" This sentiment doesn't always have to be health related either. It can reach into other aspects of your life as well. It can be relationships, financial matters (this holds true for me now, but that is another subject altogether), spiritual matters, or emotional matters. No matter what aspect of your life you feel you need to improve, you have to tell yourself that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! You have to be the one to wake up to the reality that you want better for your life. You have to be the one to say that making life changes is hard, BUT life is going to be even harder if you don't make those changes.

I know that making positive changes is difficult. If it wasn't difficult, then everyone would be making those changes and we would all be perfect specimens. Our world is not perfect. Our lives are not perfect. BUT...the decisions we make everyday is something that we can control. That decision to eat better, or that decision to take a walk is well within our control. It's all up to you. When are you going to reach the point where you tell yourself...ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777435839793338744noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2504258958828895405.post-69020321742221323532012-12-05T22:21:00.001-07:002013-12-30T00:06:41.229-07:00The Best Investment You'll Ever Make!!

If you watch this video, you may find that the speaker is talking to you personally because I knew it felt that way for me! After watching this video, it became clear to me that a lot of what was said is in fact pointed towards me. There have been times in my life when I was more concerned about how others viewed me that I totally neglected how I viewed myself. I never took the time to fully realize that I needed to work on me. I never realized that I had to "invest in me"!

Now that I'm a little bit older, (and hopefully more wiser), I can look back over my life and see the missed opportunities I had to make that investment. I see some decisions in my life that were easy decisions to make, but yet I didn't make the best decision. I should have started getting fit and healthy a long time ago...but I never did! I should have made better financial decisions...but I never did! I should have done this and that...but I never did!

So now is the time! Now is the time to look at the past and learn from the past. Now is the time to get priorities in order and forge ahead with my future. Not only is it my time to get busy living...it can be yours too! Take the time to look deep within yourself and find that little spark that can get you to think how to invest in yourself. Take action now...don't put it off any longer! You have put it off long enough....just go after it and don't settle for anything less than what you have set out to do!!!
One of the greatest gifts we possess is the ability to push ourselves into being something bigger and better than we ever imagined! There are many people in this world who have realized they have this gift and have used this gift to transform their lives into something extraordinary Some people don't even realize that they have this gift and so they wander through life wishing they could do something to change their life. They spend their days looking at others who have used this gift and and sometimes they become jealous or sometimes envious or angry that they can't be like those people.Well guess what??? You are one of those people who posses that very same gift!!! The only problem is that you don't realize it yet! Contrary to popular belief...you posses this gift too!! Sometimes you don't realize that it is there because of those little voices inside your head that tell you that you will never amount to anything. Sometimes it's those fears that are deep within you and you feed those fears by thinking that there is no way you can live a life full of positivity and substance! Well I'm here to tell you that you have greatness inside of you. You have an inner strength that you need to tap into because once you do, you can transform your life into something beautiful and spectacular! All it takes is a willingness to change. Once this willingness is in place, then take that first step (even if it is an itty bitty step) and start your transformation to greatness! To quote a motivational poster that used to hang in some of my high school classes, "YOU ARE A WORTHWHILE PERSON!" Once you start believing in yourself, you will see you own worth and you will want to nurture that worth and take care of that worth! Once that happens, you will have found your wings and you will be ready to fly!!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777435839793338744noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2504258958828895405.post-17783680744458508342012-09-04T00:50:00.000-06:002012-09-04T08:55:01.902-06:00A Change of Direction...it can lead to BIG things!!

We, as human beings, are a strange lot sometimes. Somewhere in the depths of our brains we sometimes get stuck in the daily routines of our lives.

Tell me if this sounds somewhat familiar to you...

Get up in the morning....get ready for work...get in the car...go to work....take off for a lunch break...go back to work...work a few more hours...go home...have some dinner...watch some TV...go to bed and do it all over again in the morning...

Other than the occasional change in those plans, this routine probably holds true for most people and there are variations in those plans, like kid's sports practices, other obligations, etc. For many, this seems like bring stuck in a rut. Like being in a hole that they can't get out of. Well..I have news for you...things don't have to stay that way for you!

The fact of the matter is that at any time you can make a decision to make changes in your life! At any time you can make even the smallest decision that could have a positive impact on the rest of your life. If you want better health...make that change to do something about it. It could be as simple as taking a walk around the block. Maybe start with once around the block, then maybe two times the next day, and then slowly building up how many times you walk around the block. That is just one example of how you can make a positive change to your life that can change how you feel about yourself and your life.

That old saying that it's never to late to make changes in your life is true. Life is full of all kinds of twists and turns, BUT...you are the navigator of your journey. If you don't like the road you're on now...you CAN change your course of direction. FORGE AHEAD!!!!

(When I first got out of the hospital in Albuquerque, this song came on the radio and I honestly felt that this was God's way of telling me that everything was going to be ok. We had some pretty big giants to face, but His voice of truth was right...we would be ok!)

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to
prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."- Jeremiah 29:11

(This particular scripture also helped us get through our journey. I offer it as a prayer for anyone who is currently struggling with their own adversities...may you be encouraged and lifted up like we were by this verse!)

I remember it like it was yesterday (even though it's already been a year ago).

The conversation went a little like this:

DOCTOR: "Mr. Mecale...we got the results back from pathology and the biopsy shows that you have esophageal cancer."

ME: "But what about the other biopsy that was done at the hospital in Gallup?"

DOCTOR: "We haven't got the results from that test, but chances are it's going to show the same thing...I'm sorry"

From that point on, the whole conversation was kind of a blur. I remember the doctor saying something about the various doctors that would come to talk to me about what would happen next as far as my treatment for the cancer.

After he left, while sitting with my wife, we both were reeling from the news that we just received. It was shocking, scary, but most of mind numbing. I mean honestly, who expects to go into the hospital one day to learn that they have a sickness that could potentially kill them? It was quite a shock. As a matter of fact, it was so shocking to both of us that I remember that we didn't even cry when we first found out. (Although the tears would come later.)

We sat in that hospital room and pondered what would happen next. We knew that we would have to discuss treatments and all that other medical stuff that comes from a diagnosis of having cancer. We also had to discuss what we would have to do as far as personal matters. How would we handle the doctor's visits? How about the time away from work that would be missed because of this? How are we going to provide for Kateri during this time? How do we explain to Kateri that daddy is very sick and that he is going to be going through treatments that are going to make daddy feel even more sick? How am I going to provide for my wife while I am sick? So while all these thoughts raced through my frenzied mind, there was also a moment of calmness and peacefulness that I felt within me. On one hand I was scared out of my mind, but on the other, I was ok with what I had been told. (Even though my wife was terrified beyond belief!) With all the questions that we were facing, my answer for all those questions were answered with, "We'll cross that bridge when we get there," or "We'll worry about that when we have to...there is no sense in getting worried about things before they occur."

So here we are, it is August 1, 2012, exactly one year from the day we received the news that I had cancer. It's hard to believe that it's already been a year. In retrospect, there were things that I learned while going through cancer. The kind of things that are life changing! I learned that the things that I used to think were important, no longer were that important. And the things that I took for granted, I no longer wanted to take for granted. It's like I had been given a new outlook on life. People say that going through something like cancer makes one a different person. Well that definitely holds true for me, It forced me to slow down and really take a look at my life. It forced me to take a look at the life I was leading and it made me realize that I had to make some changes. In order for me to live life to the fullest, I had to realize that I needed to be fit and healthy. No. I HAD to be fit and healthy! I faced something that could have taken my life. Only by the grace of God am I able to still be here! No more taking life for granted! I want to live each day to the fullest! I am grateful and thankful for my "new life" that I have been given. I have a loving wife and daughter who need me now more than ever. I have my health back (thanks be to God) and I have been blessed with my family and my friends who supported me (and still support me) to this day...and also by the kindness of many people who we didn't even know. I thank everyone who has been there for us!!

Now that I have looked back on this past year and I've had time to reflect on the things that happened in the past year, I am grateful that I am alive! I have my wife and daughter by my side. I have my health. I have faced the beast that is cancer and I came out clean on the other side. So in some ways, it's like I got a new life because of what we have gone through. Some might ask, "If you had to it to do all over again...would you go through it again?" If this was a part of my journey, and it took this battle with cancer to get me to the point that I'm at now in my life, then of course I would go through it again, I wouldn't have traded this experience for anything!

We all have fear in our life! That's just the way it goes. Some people are afraid of heights and some people are afraid of insects. Some are afraid of dying, while others are afraid of the dark. Most of us (myself included) have fears in us.

It seems that since we were children we were taught to live in fear. We were afraid to mess up or do something wrong because we might into trouble with our parents or other authority figures. This fear continues all the way through adolescence and on through adulthood. However in adulthood, we sometimes learn that the things that used to frighten us as children are no longer valid reasons to be afraid. As adults, at some point, we should lose certain fears. But usually what happens is that we replace those old fears with new fears. These adult fears often can cripple us as these fears deal with more realistic things, like the fear of dying of the fear of not being able to provide for a family. In as much as these fears can hold us down, should they?

We often feed into the thought that our fears dictate how our lives are lived. When we give our fears that kind of power, we are not living our life to the fullest!! But imagine, if you will, that we took that power away from our fears. What if chose to think of those fears as opportunities? What if we conditioned ourselves to take that negative force in our life and turn it around into something that could be used as positive motivation? When we choose to really live instead of living in fear some amazing things can happen. So I challenge you to take a look at what you think is a negative situation and try to see the positive side of it. I challenge you to take that fear you hold inside and turn it into a tool that you can use to better yourself!!!!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777435839793338744noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2504258958828895405.post-69947428818577672452012-06-28T18:25:00.000-06:002012-06-28T18:25:24.947-06:00Do You Have A Minute? How About 30 Minutes? If you're like most people, you're pressed for time. We all have jobs, families, and other commitments that take up our time. Between work and family and other things in life, how can one even 30 minutes out of their day to even think about exercise. Well according to the video below, 30 minutes a day of exercise could probably be the best spent 30 minutes of your day that can be so beneficial to you (and to those you love too!)

Check out the video...

Now what do you think? If someone told you that you could increase your quality of life by doing a physical activity for 30 minutes...would you take their recommendation? If you really think about it, what is 30 minutes out of your day to do some sort of physical activity to make you feel better? Instead of sitting on the couch and watching re-runs, go outside and take a 30 minute walk. Take the family with you and spend that walk as family time. It doesn't have to be strenuous or grueling...just enough to get the heart rate up a little bit. Those 30 minutes a day could add years to your life! So what are you doing still sitting there reading this?? Get up...get moving...and take that 30 minutes to do something that will have a positive impact on your life!!!!

No matter what it is we do in life, we aspire to be successful. People in all walks of life work towards success. The thing about success is that it is usually defined by the individual. For one person, success can mean having lots of money. For another person it can mean being the best parent that they can be. Still for others, there are numerous other definitions of success. But the constant in all these scenarios is that there was a desire to want to succeed. There is that something extra that pushes us to give our all in order to succeed. Being a Beachbody coach, we call that desire to want to succeed our "why".

The "why" I'm talking about is that bit of inspiration that drives me to want to succeed at the goals I have set for myself. We all have a "why"...even those people who don't realize it yet! The "why" basically is the reason why we do the things we do to reach our goals. For instance, my "why" is my family. My wife and my daughter mean the world to me and I would do anything to make sure they are taken care of. The thought of my family is what drives me to keep working on getting fit and healthy and it also drives me to build my Beachbody business. When I get discouraged, all I have to do is think of my "why" and that motivates me to keep moving forward!

In closing...I challenge you to find your "why" and use that as motivation to drive you to your kind of success!!

PS...please leave a comment...I would love to know your "why" and what drives you to be a success!!!

I still remember that time right before I was diagnosed with cancer. For two nights I really struggled with my workout. That second night I had Plyometrics! For those of you who have never done P90X, let me tell ya...PLYO X is a mutha!!! Most exercises are only 30 seconds each, BUT... jumping around like a mad person for about an hour would put anybody in their place! At the end of my first 90 days of P90X, even though the workouts were still challenging, I was able to get through them without feeling like I was going to die. But on that night, it was so hard and I felt so bad that I only made it through the first ten minutes of the workout.I had to quit! Even though I felt bad that I had to quit the workout, I was worried because I couldn't finish a workout that I was able to finish just a week before. My thoughts were that I should be kicking this workout in the butt, but physically I just wasn't able to do it. Because I wasn't able to do it physically, it forced me to look at myself mentally and say, 'WHY CAN'T I FINISH IT?" It was discouraging to say the least, but I knew that I had to figure out why I felt so bad. It was about a week later when I found out I was bleeding internally from a tumor that turned out to be cancer....

So fast forward to a few days ago. I was doing Plyo X again and it felt great. As a matter of fact, for some of the moves, I moved from the modified versions to doing the actual moves. I was able to keep up "with the kids" and it felt good. I kinda mentioned this to my wife and told her, "Hon...do you remember when I barely could do this workout right before I got sick?" She shook her head and said "Yea!"

It made really think about how far I have come since I made the decision to get fit. I did one round of P90X and was in the best shape I have ever been in. My diabetes was under control and other health factors such as high blood pressure was also in check. But as I got those things under control, the cancer diagnosis turned my world around. After going through chemo and radiation and going through surgery I knew that it would probably be a while before I could get back to P90X. I was told that I would have a 6-8 week recovery period after the surgery. I waited eight weeks and than it was on!!! I started my second round of P90X and it was R-O-U-G-H! After not doing any kind of physical activity for about 6 months, P90X was even more of a challenge than it was the first time I did it. BUT...I kept going...I kept pressing play!!! At the end of the day I know that I have come along way...but I also know that as far as I've come, I also know that I still have a ways to go. Now that I have come out clean on the other side of cancer, my priorities have changed when it come to fitness and health. At first I was happy just to lose some weight and get my diabetes under control. But now, there is always a chance that the cancer can come back. So now my focus is still to get healthy and STAY healthy, but I also know that everyday that goes by is a blessing and I owe it to myself and to my family to keep on pressing forward. I have come a long way...but I still have a ways to go....Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777435839793338744noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2504258958828895405.post-39037162843873168172012-06-04T00:49:00.000-06:002012-06-04T00:49:26.316-06:00Do You Enjoy Helping Others?WELL I DO!

There is no better satisfaction than knowing that I was able to help someone! I think most of us can agree that there is something gratifying about being to help someone who needs it. It can be as small a gesture as holding the door open for someone or something more elaborate such as giving someone money to purchase a car. Having gone through cancer, I was so humbled by the tremendous amount of help that me and my family received during that time. It was the help offered by so many that made me realize that people are willing to help when someone else is in need.

Because of that, I feel that it's my turn to pay it forward! Enter the world of Beachbody!

People have asked me what exactly is a "coach". People envision a someone who has a great physique and can bench 350 pounds. For others, an image is conjured up of someone who is in tip top shape and is leading the a Zumba class at the gym. And while Beachbody does have coaches that could fit that description, there are plenty of Beachbody coaches that are regular people who are just like me.

You see, right before I was diagnosed with cancer, I had gone though my first round of P90X. What made me decide to order P90X was the fact that I was earlier diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Because I had a wife and daughter now, I decided that I needed to do something about my health. At the end of the 90 days, I had lost 30 pounds...I truly was in the best shape of my life!! After I was diagnosed with cancer, I decided to become a coach because I was living proof that Beachbody products work AND I wanted an opportunity to share this new, healthy lifestyle that I discovered. Basically, you benefit from helping other achieve their fitness goals.

So you're probably wondering where this idea of helping people comes from. Well for one, a Beachbody coach is more than someone who "sells product". A coach helps people by motivating people to get fit and healthy. By doing this you are doing a couple of things...you are helping others achieve their fitness goals while also keeping yourself fit, which ties into the theme of being a Beachbody coach who is "a product of the product." By embracing this idea of being a "product of the product", then not only are you getting into the best shape of your life, you are setting an example for others to join you to help them get in the best shape of their lives!
You may have asked yourself, "What exactly is a Challenge Group?" Here is an overview of what exactly a Challenge Group is and what it entails.

A Challenge Group is a group of like minded people who are committed to getting physically fit and changing their lives for the better. A group is made up of five or six people who are doing the same workout. Ie. P90X, Insanity, Power 90, etc. This group is set in place to encourage one another, motivate each other and keep each other accountable for working the program. This is part of the Beachbody Challenge contest that is currently going on. Here is a brief video that explains what the Beachbody Challenge is all about.

That was one thing that I never thought I would hear in my lifetime. But on that day it was real...I had cancer.

My wife told me that I had this look of shock all over my face when the doctor told me what the problem was. I mean really... how does one take the news that they now have a disease that could ultimately kill you? Needless to say I was worried, but not overcome with panic. Which in itself may seem weird to people, but at that time I didn't allow myself to get caught up in unneeded emotions. Now don't get me wrong...I was worried. As a matter of fact, the first thing that came to my mind was my wife and daughter. If cancer decided to run it's course and decide to take me down with it, then how would my wife and daughter go on without me around? So after absorbing the news of I now had cancer, it was a matter of accepting it and moving forward. My wife and I cried for a little while and then regained our composure with this pattern repeating itself over the course of that first day.

I remember one of the first questions my wife asked me was...

"How am I going to get through this? How am I going to be strong enough?"

I basically told her...

"There are days when I will be strong and I will lift you up, but there are going to be days when I won't be strong and you are going to have to lift me up. As long as we get through this together, we'll be fine."

So next came the questions of what are we going to do about this, what are we going to do about that, etc. My answer had always been, "We'll cross that bridge when we get there...let's not worry about it now." And as much as it frustrated my wife, I explained to her that this is a stressful enough situation and we shouldn't make it more stressful by worrying about things that were out of our control for the time being.

After that first day of many questions that were met with uncertain answers, I told her her my philosophy during this whole ordeal, which we adopted and shared with our family members. The first thing we did was give the whole situation over to God and allow Him to work his miracles. Next I came up with three phrases that helped my wife and I (and hopefully my family) get through this. They were:

This is NOT a death sentence...

This is just a bump in the road that we have to get over...

From here on in, we fight like hell to get rid of this....

Thankfully we made this our anthem before the oncologist came to see me, because this put us in the right frame of mind for when the oncologist came to see us.

The oncologist came in the room, introduced himself and asked us, "How do you feel about this whole thing?" I told him we were optimistic about it and that we were relying on God to help us get through it and that I was going to be okay. And as much as I know he meant well, I also knew that he was trying to be realistic about the situation and told us in not so many words, "This cancer can kill you!"

To be continued....Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777435839793338744noreply@blogger.com0
